Let’s Clear Up Some Myths!

August 29, 2024

Psychiatrists have helped untold millions of people sort out their mental and emotional difficulties so they can lead more rewarding lives. Unfortunately, however, many individuals are afraid to seek therapy because of their negative misconceptions about how it works.

The office of Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry wants to sort out some fiction from fact. The work we do with patients is collaborative and focuses on personal growth. We identify and discuss the strengths they already have, and then apply new knowledge and self-awareness to achieve greater insight into their goals and objectives. They gain better control over their ability to balance their emotions and achieve their desired outcomes in their relationships and life.

Fiction: Depression Is Just Self-Pity

Fact: Depression is a complex mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities. It’s different from self-pity in that it often involves imbalances in the brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine. Genetics can also play a role. Depression can last for weeks, months or even years. Self-pity is usually a temporary state of feeling sorry for yourself. Symptoms can include physical pain and changes in sleep patterns, appetite and energy levels, all of which aren’t typically part of self-pity.

Fiction: It comes on quickly.

Fact: Depression can develop gradually and subtly, making it difficult for people to recognize what’s happening to them. Depression often begins with minor symptoms that gradually intensify. At first, a person might have mild changes in mood, energy or interest in activities that she (or he) easily dismisses as temporary or situational. People may mask their symptoms by maintaining their usual routines or by putting on a facade of wellness. Individuals might normalize their feelings of sadness or fatigue while attributing them to stress, lack of sleep or other external factors.

Depression can lead to a slow decline in functionality in that someone might start withdrawing socially, neglecting various responsibilities or slowing productivity at work. The changes are so gradual, though, that they might not be noticeable right away. Life events such as relationship issues, job stress or financial problems can trigger depressive symptoms. These external stressors can mask the underlying depression; the stressors seem like a reaction to the situation rather than a developing mental health condition.

Fiction: Help means taking psychiatric drugs for the rest of your life.

Fact: Meds are only some of the tools used to lift depression. A psychiatrist may deem them unnecessary for many patients. Even if the psychiatrist believes you’ll benefit from a medication, it probably won’t be forever. He (or she) will help you decide when you no longer need medication.
