Most of us have no hesitation about visiting a doctor if we’re suffering from a physical ailment. But for some, the stigmas that still remain around mental illness may prevent them from seeking the help they need. The psychiatrist at Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry wants to discuss some of the stigmas that continue to persist about mental illness, and how our training in both the physical and mental aspects of psychological problems makes us uniquely qualified to treat our patients.
One common misconception is that mental illness is a sign of personal weakness. In fact, mental illnesses are medical conditions often caused by a combination of biological, genetic, and environmental factors. A mental disorder is no more a sign of weakness than an illness like diabetes.
Another misconception that leads some to avoid therapy is the notion that mental health treatment is only for so-called “crazy” people. Therapy provides a safe space to address a wide range of common conditions, including anxiety and depression, social isolation, coping with grief, and relationship problems. Tens of millions of people throughout the U.S. seek mental health treatment each year, according to SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
Some may be hesitant to see a psychiatrist, who is a highly trained medical doctor, because of a reluctance to take prescribed medication to manage a mental health condition. Medication when combined with therapy have been proven to be an effective approach to achieving successful results.
Our psychiatrist at Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry wants our prospective patients to know that seeking help for a condition affecting their mental health is a sign of strength, not weakness. It is a courageous step toward confronting the barriers that are preventing them from experiencing a life of fulfillment and well-being. We provide the support and guidance to help our patients achieve these goals. Please contact us today to arrange a confidential consultation.
