One question we often hear from prospective patients at Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry is about the differences between a therapist and a psychotherapist. The two titles are often used interchangeably, so the confusion is understandable. While both treat mental health conditions, there are some important differences in education and training.
A therapist is a licensed mental health professional specializing in “talk therapy,” also known as psychotherapy. A therapist can provide help for individuals dealing with a range of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, coping with stress and relationship problems.
In terms of education and training, therapists typically have earned a master's or doctoral degree in psychology, social work, or counseling, and have completed an internship or residency. They cannot prescribe medication.
A psychiatrist has earned a medical degree and has completed a residency in psychiatry. We are uniquely qualified in the diagnosis of mental health disorders that can be effectively treated with medication, including attention deficit disorder, anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder. Our training also enables us to distinguish mental health conditions from medical problems that may also exist.
Besides prescribing medication, our treatment is generally combined with psychotherapy to help identify the underlying emotional issues at the root of a patient’s condition.
During our initial visits, we ask our patients about their personal and family medical history, and whether they’ve visited a psychiatrist in the past. We’ll ask questions about what led you to schedule an appointment and what we can do to help. We’ll develop a treatment plan that may require lab testing to assess any medical conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
If you’ve been delaying seeking help for a chronic mental health issue, please know that at Vibrant Integrative Psychiatry we provide a safe, confidential space, offering experienced, compassionate care. You don’t have to face this alone. Please contact us today for an introductory appointment.
